Senior Architect / Architectural Designer—Education

Isthmus is an award-winning, integrated design studio that blends architecture, landscape, urban design and graphic design. Established in 1988, we are guided by a clear set of principles and ideas; our kaupapa is based on deepening the relationships between land, people and culture.

We now have an opportunity for a Senior Architect or Architectural Designer to join our collaborative studio environment in Tāmaki Makaurau or Te Whanganui-a-tara. We are open to candidates looking to work full-time or part-time (3 days per week or more).   For this role we are seeking extensive experience in the Education sector.

You’ll be:

  • Playing an important leadership role in the team, particularly within the detail and delivery of our Education projects.
  • Supporting complex jobs with design-led and technically innovative solutions, while understanding the wider project context.
  • Applying the breadth of your skills across a role where your creativity and technical ability will come to the fore and continue to grow.

You’ll have:

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience, with specific expertise in the detailed designed and delivery within the Education sector.
  • A passion for construction detailing, technical proficiency and documentation best practise with a drive for excellence, innovation and creativity.
  • The ability and confidence to make timely decisions.
  • Naturally creative and critical thinking, bringing design and planning solutions and using research to inform and test ideas.
  • Strong relationship building skills, fostering positive working relationships with our clients, consultants and contractors and acting as a valuable mentor for graduate architects.
  • Excitement about collaborating within our “no boundaries” design environment.
  • Technical skills across construction techniques & documentation software (ideally with Revit, but including AutoCAD, ArchiCAD).

Urban Designers

We are seeking Urban Designers at all levels to join our collaborative studio environments in Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Whanganui a Tara and Ōtautahi 

You’ll be: 

  • Playing an important role in the team, particularly with leadership of projects if at Senior level or above.  
  • Supporting or leading complex jobs with design-led and technically innovative solutions, while understanding the wider project context.  
  • Working on a diverse range of inspiring and impactful projects. 
  • Applying the breadth of your skills across a role where your creativity and technical ability will come to the fore and continue to grow.  

You’ll have: 

  • Design-led conceptual thinking coupled with a drive for excellence, innovation, and creativity. 
  • The ability and confidence to make timely decisions. 
  • Naturally creative and critical thinking, bringing design and planning solutions and using research to inform and test ideas. 
  • Strong relationship building skills, fostering positive working relationships with clients, collaborators, and colleagues. 
  • Excitement about working within our “no boundaries” design environment. 
  • Technical skills across construction techniques & documentation software. 
  • A relevant tertiary qualification.

Landscape Architects

We are seeking Landscape Architects at all levels to join our collaborative studio environments in Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Whanganui a Tara and Ōtautahi 

You’ll be: 

  • Playing an important role in the team, particularly with leadership of projects if at Senior level or above.  
  • Supporting or leading complex jobs with design-led and technically innovative solutions, while understanding the wider project context.  
  • Working on a diverse range of inspiring and impactful projects across a range of sectors including urban space, streetscape, education, and landscape infrastructure. 
  • Applying the breadth of your skills across a role where your creativity and technical ability will come to the fore and continue to grow. 

You’ll have:

  • The ability and confidence to make timely decisions. 
  • Naturally creative and critical thinking, bringing design and planning solutions and using research to inform and test ideas.

Senior Graphic Designer

Do you want to contribute to projects that inform the way people live, work and play?

We are seeking a senior graphic designer interested in urbanism to join an interdisciplinary team of architects, graphic designers, landscape architects, and urban designers. You will provide high quality on-brand design and contribute to diverse projects requiring environmental graphic design and brand identity. We are open to the role being based in any of our three studios: Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Whanganui a tara or Ōtautahi.

You will be inquisitive about the world around you, understand user needs, be planet focused, and apply a passion for design and innovation in urbanism. You will bring a high level of verbal, written and interpersonal skills to communicate and anticipate opportunities that are not obvious to others.

Qualifications & Experience  

  • 5+ years experience.
  • Graphic designer with relevant tertiary level design qualification.
  • Proven writing skills.
  • Experience working with brand identity systems and/or wayfinding systems.
  • Adobe Creative Suite essential.
  • WordPress, Sketch-up, GIS desirable.

Key responsibilities  

  • Guardian of Isthmus visual identity
  • Manage designers for bid documents, capability documents, maps, and the visual communication of Isthmus projects.
  • Grow our graphic design capability and its application to brand identity and wayfinding projects.
  • Lead bespoke brand identity and/or wayfinding designs.

Communications Designer

Do you want to contribute to projects that inform the way people live, work and play?

We are seeking a communications operator interested in urbanism to join an interdisciplinary team of architects, graphic designers, landscape architects, and urban designers. Our communications strategy and agile/lean workplan aims to grow and diversify our client base. Our social media presence plays an important role in building our brand while staying true to our values and kaupapa.  

In this role you will provide intelligent on-brand external communications and contribute your thinking to diverse Isthmus projects. You will be inquisitive about the world around you, understand user needs, be planet focused, and apply a passion for design and innovation in urbanism. You will be a natural wordsmith and bring an understanding of a values-based approach—where communications are grounded in core values.   

We are open to different levels of applicant from graduate to several years’ experience. The role can be based in any of our three studios: Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Whanganui a tara, or Ōtautahi.  

Skills        

  • Understand digital comms and social media.  
  • Know how to use digital platforms to tell compelling stories that build the Isthmus brand, increase client loyalty, and build a bigger following of people who resonate with Isthmus’ values, ethics, and interests.  
  • Display an ability to keep up with changing trends, to always be learning and applying this to your work. 
  • Great written and verbal communication skills.  
  • Ability to implement a digital and social media strategy and plan on a day-to-day basis.   
  • Ability to push through and move work forward, breaking it down into manageable chunks.
